Local SEO for Tradies: How to Win More Jobs in Your Area

A homeowner’s hot water dies on a Tuesday night. They grab their phone, Google “plumber near me”, and call the first name they see. If that’s not you, that job’s gone. And it’ll happen again tomorrow.

Most tradies are doing fine work, charging fair prices, and still wondering why the phone isn’t ringing. The answer is almost always the same: their digital shopfront is shut. Local SEO is what fixes that. It’s the difference between being the first result a customer finds or being invisible.

So what actually is Local SEO?

Local SEO just means making sure your business shows up when people in your area search for what you do. That’s it. It’s not magic. It’s not complicated. It’s about making sure Google knows who you are, where you work, and that you’re legit.

You don’t need to understand algorithms. You just need to do a handful of things consistently. Here’s what actually moves the needle.

1. Sort out your Google Business Profile

If you haven’t claimed your Google Business Profile, do it today. In fact, it’s free and it’s probably the single most important thing you can do for local search.

Once you’re in, fill everything out properly. Your real business name, your phone number, your service area, your hours, what you do. Additionally, add photos: your van, your work, even your face. Businesses with photos get more clicks. It’s that simple.

And keep it updated. If you’ve moved, changed your number, or added a new service, update it. In particular, outdated info is worse than no info.

2. Get your reviews sorted

When someone searches for a tradie, they look at reviews before they call. Five stars with no words written means nothing. You want actual sentences from real customers.

The easiest way to get reviews? Ask. After a job, text or email the customer a direct link to your Google review page. Most people are happy to leave one if you make it easy. Don’t wait, ask the same day while the job’s fresh in their mind. For a step-by-step playbook, read our guide on how to get more Google reviews.

And when someone leaves a review, respond to it. Good or bad. It shows you’re paying attention and it looks good to Google too.

3. Be clear about where you work

Google needs to know your service area. In your Google Business Profile, you can list the suburbs or regions you cover. Do it. Be specific.

Similarly, on your website, mention your service areas naturally in your content. A plumber serving the western suburbs should say that somewhere on their site, not just in the footer but in the actual copy. Google reads it, and so do your potential customers.

4. Make sure your details match everywhere

Your business name, address, and phone number should be identical everywhere it appears online: your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, any directory listings. For instance, even small differences (like “St” vs “Street”) can confuse Google and hurt your rankings.

So go through your listings and make sure they all match. Boring job, but worth doing.

5. Your website needs to work on a phone

In practice, most people searching for a tradie are on their phone. If your website is slow to load or hard to read on mobile, they’ll leave and call someone else. Google also ranks mobile-friendly sites higher.

Pull up your site on your phone right now. Can you read it easily? Is there a clear phone number to tap? Does it load quickly? If the answer is no to any of those, it’s worth fixing.

The honest truth about Local SEO

None of this is a magic fix. However, it takes a bit of time to set up and a bit of consistency to maintain. But for tradies who do it properly, the results are real: more calls, more jobs, and less relying on word of mouth alone.

The tradies who struggle with this stuff aren’t slow. They’re just busy doing what they’re good at. That’s where we come in.
